I agree! I too watch GH to try to escape the real world. I completely cut the show off during the Jordan/Porsche conversation. I have also deleted the show from my DVR recordings. After watching GH for 45 years, I'm done. Thanks, Bob.

Couldn't agree more. GH has always been proactive, weaving poignant current events into the story lines. Well Done, but don't stop with one day of magnificently acted conversations. Draw this dialogue out a bit. Not so much as to suffocate viewers, just enough to make us a little uncomfortable and God willing, accountable for the silence that is not acceptable.

Michael and Joss need to take off the rose colored glasses where their mother is concerned. Their mother is the one who had Jason stabbed instead of doing what Jason told her to do. Their mother is the one who gave the orders to break Jason out of the hospital which led to him being shot; Jason again told her not to do it.

I wish someone would tell General Hospital that all they're doing is causing more division. Before this show today, I was seeing no 'color' at all. Now they've pulled the race card. They need to STOP IT! As a white person, I'll admit I've seen some bad treatment of black people, especially by law enforcement. People are taught racism by their parents, and that needs to stop. God put many different colors of flowers in His garden, and they all need the same care. We are all people, and we all bleed the same color. I also was seeing no color at all before today. Coming from a place where 99% of the population is white (I think. We have a lot of Turks here, I am not even sure if they are considered 'white'). When I first started watching GH and the other soaps on Bob's blog, I could actually "see" black people because I am not used to seeing them here and I rarely watch US movies. But after a while, I completely forgot about it and everyone just looked the same to me, everyone was just a person, a man or a woman. I have no idea what the situation is like in the US so I am not going to judge, all I am saying is that by pulling the race card like you said, it is making people like me become aware of race, but not in a good way. It is not going to turn me into a racist, but it is going to make me see the difference between black and white people where before I would just see 'people'. There was this situation on Days of our lives where aunt Paulina pointed out that there were no black owned businesses in Salem town square when she was interested in renting Gabi's old store. Personally, I think that it would be racist to offer a black person to rent a store because there are black, too. I don't think racism only refers to treating a person negatively because of their skin color. I lost a bit of respect for Paulina when she did that, I thought that she would actually try to convince Abe that her concept was the best. But that's the problem with people, as long as something positive is happening to them it's all good. That being said, I have never been to the US, I don't mean to offend anyone, this is just my 0.02.
These days it's not being taken into account the issues others see blacks sometimes in a negative light, ie, gangsta, the persistent drug issues in so many black neighborhoods, high unwed mothers on handouts rather than obtain education among them. Happy to see the conversation between these two lovely ladies, also Trina today. I was wondering when they would talk about the reality of coloured people. Colour with a "u" b/c I live in Canada. I am pleased that race was discussed. As an East Indian/South Asian, we also are aware of race every time we step out the door, even though Canadians are quite nice to minorities we have some racists here too.

ReplyDeleteOMG! Soaps have always dealt with the issues of the day, are you kidding? Domineering husbands not letting their wives work, cheating spouses, abortion, AIDS, sexuality, harassment at work and on the street, domestic violence, cancer, diabetes, blended families, the pressures of getting into college, cheating on exams, election fraud, bribes, crimes of all sorts--suddenly this one issue is verboten because it makes some people uncomfortable? Good. About time people had to deal with reality. Because it is reality. Soaps just turn reality into stories, some more fantastical than others. But they are about life. And racism, unfortunately, is a big part of life.

DeleteI also thik it's pretty telling that the ONE thing out of that list of yours that has caused the most outrage is a perfectly legitimate conversation between two AA mothers about their AA children.
Hell, even abortion, which is another hot topic conversation, doesn't get this much outrage.

suzy that conversation was bullshit...black women do not suffer in this country I am a black woman and a Manager at a Global company...now on the other hand black men do suffer. Sometimes we black women also cause problems for black men....we need to be honest.

Happy to see the conversation between these two lovely ladies, also Trina today. I was wondering when they would talk about the reality of coloured people. Colour with a "u" b/c I live in Canada. I am pleased that race was discussed. As an East Indian/South Asian, we also are aware of race every time we step out the door, even though Canadians are quite nice to minorities we have some racists here too.

ReplyDeleteGlad to see the conversations on today's show about BLM, for those saying gh is playing politics nope no sale they have consistently tackled racism, aids disability and many other issues it's ALWAYS been there so if you don't like it stop watching it, first interacial relationship of a main character and biracial child in 88, Bradley Wards murder although that was far better written and acted but interestingly enough soaps don't own their own part in racism black men on soaps can be dark skinned or light no issue but anyone else notice black female actresses tend to all be very light skinned or biracial especially if they are a love interest they toss you Mae Mae aunt Stella and Phyllis but for some reason the last dark skinned actress to play a love interest was Claudia and that was in the 70's
